Deadlines for Receipt of Beacon Articles
Conference Edition July 14, 2017
Winter/Spring Edition January 25, 2018

Tips for Writing Articles

This year, articles for The Beacon will focus on “Doing What Works” as coined by the U.S. Department of Education. “Doing What Works” may include best practices, advocacy, innovative ideas, or evidence-based resources that have worked for your school counseling program. The focus is to share with other counselors, practices and interventions that are likely to work. We would like The Beacon to be a useable resource for school counselors that can help to supplement their programs across the state. There will be two editions of The Beacon this year. The articles you submit do not have to be directly related to your leadership position. We would like to focus on ideas and practices that would benefit counselors throughout Georgia.

The article may be written by you or you may seek an article written by a fellow professional school counselor. Provide articles full of innovative methods which may include a thorough description of techniques, strategies, skills and activities developed or implemented by counselors. Discuss why the intervention is particularly effective. Articles are 500 words or less. Ideas for articles could include using data effectively in planning groups, examples of surveys and using survey data, counselors effectively using technology, ways to advocate for school counselors and counseling programs, or public relations campaigns.

Procedures
Article Checklist (please check off on each submission):

___ 1. At the top of each article submitted:

     ___ Center title of article
___ Center your name and email address
___ Your GSCA Leadership position (if applicable)

Example:

Best Practices in Editing the Beacon
     Davesha Gibbs, dgibbs@gocats.org
     2nd Vice President

____ 2. Type the article in 12” font
____ 3. Please check spelling other than just spell check as it will not catch all
grammatical errors.
____ 4. Proof article for clarity and understanding.
____ 5. Please have someone else proof your submission for errors before you email it.
____ 6. Length of article is 500 words or less.

Submission:

  1. All articles MUST be sent electronically in Microsoft Word format. Faxed or hard copies of articles will not be accepted.
  2. Once emailed, you may not make changes to your article. Please email only your finalized version.
  3. Submit photographs when available. Pictures should be of high resolution (at least 288K). Photos are best with a light background. This is the greatest concern of the graphic designer and printer. Articles may be submitted to work and/or home email address. Send only the photograph you want included.
  4. Upon receipt of the article, I will reply to you via email to let you know that I have received your submission. If you do not hear from me, I did not get it. Please watch for a reply.

Thanks for your efforts in following these guidelines, meeting the deadlines listed above, and helping me publish a professional source of information for Georgia School Counselors.
