Technology and social media are pervasive forces influencing how we view ourselves, cope with stress and interact socially. Examine research on the link between social media/technology and mental wellness, and learn how technology both helps and hinders self-perception, coping skills and social connectivity.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  1. Explain how technology and social media pose both negative and positive implications in regard to self-concept, stress management and healthy relationships.
  2. List ways to encourage students to use technology in a positive and productive manner.

Presenters:
Sharon Powers works for Fairfax County Public Schools as a school counselor at Vienna Elementary and previously served as a middle school counselor. She is passionate about mental wellness and equipping students with positive coping skills. Sharon also writes on topics relevant to parents and educators of kids and teens on her website, InBetweenYears.com.

Ashlee Nelson works in Fairfax County Public Schools as a school counselor at Washington Irving Middle School. Nelson is passionate about advocating for equity amongst diverse student populations. She serves in various leadership roles supporting school counselors new to the profession and on school-wide initiatives.
